Sam Houston’s annual Homecoming took place on the Thursday, Oct. 21 at 6:15 p.m. This 80s themed parade started on Sam Houston Avenue and went all the way down to 11th St. The streets were lined up with families, students, as well as faculty of the college.
“I have been here since 1986, so it is a way for the community to get together,” parade judge Kimberly Johnson said. “As you can see, these are just a few of the people that come in. It’s a way for Sam Houston to tie into the community and Huntsville Independent School District and other vendors around. It is a tradition I look forward to every year.”
Food was catered to by the community, and a DJ was present playing music to surround the street.
With the ’80s theme, balloons filled up the streets. Not only were there floats, but there were antique cars, the Bearkat Marching Band and fraternities and sororities. The judges were looking for the best float and theme.
“We are looking for the most creative, best use of theme, enthusiasm and the different colors that tie into the theme,” Johnson stated. “It’s ’80s this year, and I’m an ’80s baby so it brings back great memories.”
Memories were relieved with the rock music, leg warmers, high ponytails, boom boxes and shimmery decorations.
For new people to the community, this parade brought in ties to not only the university itself but to the vendors and people participating.
“It was so fun being a part of the parade, I’m so glad I got to experience it,” freshman nursing major Andrea Dishman said. “My favorite part of the parade was walking with my sisters and passing out candies to the children.”
Sororities and various organizations, such as Alpha Chi Omega, had their float during the parade, with each showing a different take on the theme. Alpha Chi Omega’s float was mixed with the fraternity Fiji, which was covered with balloons, disco balls and ’80s themed clothing.
“I loved how we were all just connecting with each other and how the music was playing with everyone around us was just dancing,” Dishman said. “Everyone was so happy to be there.”
