Brookshire Brothers and Crime Stoppers partnered together to host a food drive at their location on 11th street in Huntsville, Texas on Nov. 12 to benefit the Good Shepherd Mission. From 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. they collected non-perishable foods and other food donations for their holiday food drive.
While the community was encouraged to come and donate excess food to help those who are food insecure, much of the day is loading onto a truck the pre-packed bags done by Brookshire employees.
It is estimated that in the U.S. that one-in-nine people struggle with hunger, according to Forbes. Food insecurity can lead to lasting health consequences that can make it harder for them to regain stable financial footing.
There are multiple brown paper bags on the long table filled with canned items, other types of non-perishable foods items or boxed food types. The volunteers, most wearing identifying purple shirts, worked to encourage people to donate.
“My goal number would be about 100 to 200 just to get people food for the holidays, ” student volunteer of the Good Shepherd Mission Beulah Beebe said.
Isaiah Byrd, who is also a first-time student volunteer at the Good Shepherd Mission food drive event, points out that this is not the only time or location you can give to the homeless shelter.
“If they actually go to the actual Good Shepherd Mission they can donate clothes, food, toiletries and toys in good condition,” Byrd said.
Debra Jones is a member of the Good Shepherd Mission taking part in collecting food donations and money donations.
“We always exceed what they’re expecting,” Jones said.
The mission collected over $2,000 of food and other kinds of donations from the event.
“We’re going to make sure that everybody gets fed,” Jones said. “Otherwise, they aren’t going to where they need to go.”
