Bearkats Fall in Another Overtime Game

Sam Houston Bearkat women’s basketball cannot overcome the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros in Edinburg, Texas, as they lose 65-61 in overtime fashion Saturday night.

Both the Bearkats (12-14, 8-8) and Vaqueros (11-16, 5-11) had rough shooting nights as both of them shot under 40% from the field each.

Sam Houston was up 48-40 to begin the fourth quarter after outscoring the Vaqueros 20-8 in the third quarter.

UTRGV was able to tie it up at 55-55 after sophomore guard Iyana Dorsey hit a free throw with 24 seconds left.

Dorsey would finish with a game-high 20 points.

The Vaqueros then defensively took over and held off the Kats.

The Bearkats got only 13 points combined in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Senior forward Madelyn Batista led Sam Houston in scoring with 17 points. She also grabbed nine rebounds.

Redshirt junior forward Kaylee Jefferson shot well from the field and got 13 points.

Redshirt sophomore Mikayla Woods got 14 points with six rebounds.

Fellow sophomore guard Tierney Coleman had 13 points.

Sam Houston will now head back to Huntsville, Texas, for their final two games of the regular season before they head to Las Vegas for the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.

Their first of the two is on Tuesday against the Abiliene Christian Wildcats.

The game will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and on the radio on 90.5 KSHU.

Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
