Crawfish and Baseball

Crawfish was not the only thing being boiled outside of Don Sanders Stadium in Huntsville, Texas as the Bearkats were also boiling with their bats when they faced the Cougars Tuesday night.

Sam Houston’s baseball team defeated The University of Houston’s team 9-3 on March 28on its annual Bearkat Country Crawfish Boil 2023 with center fielder Joe Redfield staying hot with his bat and starting pitcher Marshall Wales going five strong innings.

“Tonight, I am seeing the ball well, I was just taking advantage of pitches that were given to me and just trying to do my part in our lineup,” said Redfield.

His bat was not his only weapon tonight. He also showcased his leather with a diving catch from center field at the top of the third inning preventing the Cougars from gaining momentum and keeping them at one run.

“It was pretty surreal honestly cause I just heard the crowd erupt and that’s probably one of the biggest catches I’ve made,” Redfield said.

Marshall Wales had a great outing going five innings, allowing three hits, striking out four hitters and only allowing one run.

“I knew that was goal, that’s been kind of the goal as a starter to be efficient, get as many innings in and as few pitches as possible, I was really happy to go five,” Wales said.

The Bearkats snatched[1]  a six-game losing streak against Houston with their last meeting Houston coming on top 9-1. Sam Houston baseball coach credits the team for just sticking together and acknowledged how big of a play Redfield’s diving catch was.

“Well I thought the guys played well, you know we’ve had a rough 10 to 12 days being on the road this and that, we got in late Sunday night and did a good job of coming out today and playing well, all in all a win is a win,” Sirianni said.

“That was a big play, 6-1 at the time and as soon as it was hit I thought he had split the gap but Joe is an aggressor out there and made a great play.”[2]

The Bearkats will look to continue their win streak when New Mexico State comes into town to play a three game series with first pitch set to be thrown at 6:30 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium.
