Chambers County Woman Found Dead After Weeklong Search as Deputies Say She Vanished From Home and Was Later Discovered in Woods

Search crews in a wooded area during a missing person investigation in Chambers County, Alabama

CHAMBERS COUNTY, AL — A Chambers County woman who had been missing for a week was found dead Sunday after a search that began when she disappeared from her home on Oct. 11, according to the Chambers County Alabama Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said 35-year-old Sarah Barninger was last seen on video surveillance walking away from her home around 10:15 a.m. that morning. She was reported missing the same day, setting off a search that continued through the following week.

Authorities later said a search team located her body in a wooded area behind the home. Deputies described the area as difficult to reach, saying it was on property owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and could not be accessed by vehicle.

Video showed Barninger leaving home the morning she disappeared

Investigators said surveillance footage captured Barninger walking away from her residence shortly before she was reported missing. That video became one of the key early details in the case, helping deputies establish the timeline for her disappearance.

The sheriff’s office said she left behind all of her belongings. Those items included her purse, driver’s license, debit card, credit cards and phone, which deputies said had been factory reset.

Officials have not said why the phone was reset or whether investigators believe that detail is connected to her disappearance. The focus of the search remained on finding Barninger after she was first reported missing on Oct. 11.

Search teams found her body about a mile behind the house

After days of searching, Chambers County deputies announced on Sunday, Oct. 18, that a Central Georgia K9 Search & Rescue team had found Barninger’s body in a wooded area about a mile behind her home.

Deputies said the location was not one that could be reached by vehicle, which made the search more challenging. The wooded setting also meant the area had to be checked by search personnel on foot, according to officials.

The discovery brought the weeklong search to an end, though investigators continued working to determine exactly what happened in the days after she was last seen leaving home.

Deputies say the death appeared to involve a self-inflicted gunshot wound

The sheriff’s office said Barninger appeared to have suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. That assessment came from deputies at the scene, though the final cause and manner of death will be determined through the medical examination process.

Her body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for an autopsy. Officials have not released additional findings from that examination.

Investigators have also not publicly detailed whether they recovered a weapon or found any other evidence at the scene. For now, authorities are treating the case as an active investigation while awaiting forensic results.

Coroner and criminal investigators are leading the case

The Chambers County Coroner’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division are currently leading the investigation into Barninger’s death. Their work will center on piecing together her final movements, the search findings and the autopsy results.

Officials have not announced any arrests or said that foul play is suspected. They also have not shared a possible motive or explained what may have led to her death.

Until the forensic examination is complete, deputies are relying on the physical evidence recovered in the wooded area and the surveillance timeline from the morning she disappeared.

A weeklong disappearance ended with painful questions for the community

The case drew attention because of the length of the search and the unusual circumstances surrounding Barninger’s disappearance. She was last seen leaving home, but her personal items remained inside, and her phone had already been reset when deputies reviewed the situation.

Those details, along with the remote location where her body was found, left investigators with a narrow window of events to examine. The sheriff’s office has not said whether anyone else was involved.

For now, the confirmed facts are limited to the timeline deputies have released: Barninger vanished on Oct. 11, search crews found her body a week later, and an autopsy is pending in Alabama.
