The Sam Houston State University Quidditch team attended the Alamo Cup this past weekend and experienced both some wins and loses.

“SHSU Quidditch gave great effort but didn’t do as well as previously hoped,” Quidditch player Reese Roberts said. “We faced and defeated the Texas State [University] Sharknados, but lost to Clonestar and [University of Texas]. However, when we faced UT in bracket play we managed to keep the game within snitch range for 18 minutes, which I believe is an achievement in itself.”

This is the first semester the team has competed with enough players to split into two teams. The B team is not registered with the United States Quidditch Association, but it is an important step for the team, according to Roberts.

“All that is really known about the split is the names on the rosters,” Roberts said. “Since the B team is not official with the USQ, the team will have little going on during this semester, but the officers of the club are working toward making them an official team. In the meantime, the B team itself is in the process of organizing itself – things such as jerseys, team requirements and what this creation of a new team means for the election of captains are being discussed. There is an understandable amount of tension as we are trying to maintain a sort of separate but equal thought process to this with the understanding that we are all part of the club itself.”

The tournament was hosted by University of Texas-San Antonio Quidditch and was attended by other Southwest teams.

The team is also getting ready for the regional championship to determine which Southwest teams will go on to World Cup 8. SHSU Quidditch won division 2 at World Cup 6 in 2013.

“The team is preparing for the Southwest Regional Championship, which is coming up in two weeks where we hope to secure a spot to World Cup 8,” Roberts said. “We are also in preparation to host the 3rd annual Bottom of the Bracket Tournament which will be on March 21 at the SHSU intermural fields.”
