Senior Logan Boatner finished fourth place individually while Sam Houston State men’s golf team ended up in seventh out of 15 teams in the Texas-San Antonio Oak Hills Invitational.
This was the Bearkats’ first tournament of the season.
“The guys fought really hard on a tough golf course so I’m proud of their effort,” head coach Brandt Kieschnick said. “The team played really well on par 3s and par 4s and were in the top of the field.”
Boatner ended the tournament by shooting a 73, but in the second round, he shot a 66, which was the best scores of the entire tournament. Boatner shot the lowest score from the team in the first round, which was a 72.
“Accuracy was key to my play this week,” Boatner said. “Hitting it straight and missing in the right spot was crucial. The main thing I struggled with this week was putting.”
Senior Zach Cabra knocked his score down one stroke each round, scoring a 72 in the third round and ending with a score of 219. Cabra’s scores landed him in 24th place.
Freshman Jake McCrory shot a 75 in the first and final round of the tournament while shooting a 72 in the second round. McCrory finished the tournament tied for 34th place with five other players.
Senior J.T. Taylor had a tough outing this week. He shot a 75 in both the first and second rounds before ending the third round with a 76. Taylor tied with Chris Verrougstraete from Louisiana-Lafayette and Rice’s Kevin Reilly in 50th place.
Sophomore Andrew Ertel shot a 77 in each round of the tournament and ended the tournament in 66th place tied with Jeff Wibawa from Rice and conference opponent Guillaume Chalancon of Houston Baptist.
Playing individually, the sophomore Kyle Hodges shot a 78 in the first round, an impressive 71 in the second and a 75 in the final round. The score ended him 42nd place tied with two other players.
Baylor won the tournament by 16 strokes, with UTSA in second place with a 14-over and Oklahoma was third.
SHSU will play in the Houston/Rice Bayou City Intercollegiate that will be held in Houston on Feb. 20-22. The Bearkats women’s golf team will play in the Texas State Invitational in New Braunfels on Sunday and Monday.
