With the spring semester on its way, many Sam Houston State University students are making decisions about graduate schools. Graduate Admissions hopes to encourage current students to choose SHSU as their graduate school of choice.
Graduate Admissions will hold an open house tomorrow for all current SHSU students. Students can drop by at any time during the event without registration and meet with an admissions counselor. Students will be able to sit down one-on-one with admissions advisors to answer any questions from students.
“This is the second of two open houses we have on campus and students can stop in per their class schedule and request to meet with a counselor to learn more about a program of study that they might be interested in,” Mary Pascarella, director of graduate admissions, said. “It is for students that are currently Sam Houston students that are thinking about graduate programs. It is open to all levels, all students, and they can come in and just learn more about graduate studies at Sam Houston and what that entails.”
SHSU offers the same small class sizes and individual attention students are used to in undergraduate degrees in a number of masters and doctoral subjects.
“We have really dedicated graduate program faculty and because we are a smaller school, I think the students’ ability to work closer with faculty in areas of research that are of interest to the students and not necessarily the professors is a really big deal, especially in the sciences,” Pacarella said.
One of the major draws for SHSU graduate students is the criminal justice program.
“Our criminal justice program is one of the best in the country so I think students that are interested in forensic science and some of the research opportunities in the science program is pretty remarkable here,” Pascarella said. “We have some industry leaders that are well published and well researched.”
The open house runs tomorrow from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Estill room 105
