Cajun sounds and tastes are coming to Huntsville as one Greek organization attempts to raise money for their philanthropy organization.
The Eta Omicron chapter of Panhellenic sorority Sigma Sigma Sigma will host the first annual Tri Sigma Crawfish Boil on Friday. The sorority’s philanthropy is the Sigma Sigma Sigma Foundation, which helps support kid with terminal illnesses, according to Tri Sig philanthropy chairman Erin Willey.
“Our philanthropy is the Tri Sigma Foundation,” Willey said. “We help with child play therapy for terminally ill children [and] just help their bad days and make them a little better.”
The sorority has paired up with a crawfish company from Katy and will bring 600 pounds of crawfish to Huntsville. True Hernandez, vice president of operations for Tri Sig said there will be music at the event, which is open to the public.
“We are going to have live music – it’s Jerret Zoch and OSR band will be playing there,” Hernandez said. “It is open to the Huntsville community, anybody at Sam Houston and families.”
Tri Sig wanted to try something out of the norm for a philanthropy event this year. Willey said they wanted to do something that other Greek organizations have not yet done.
“[We were] trying to figure out something that is fun and people haven’t done before or any other Greeks have done before,” Willey said. “So we were like ‘crawfish. We live in Texas. People like crawfish.’”
The sorority wanted to have a location that was close to the university and was easy for student to access. The organization eventually settled on Gibbs Ranch as the event’s venue.
“We tossed around the idea of the fairgrounds or the intramural fields or Bearkat alley,” Hernandez said. “[Gibbs Ranch] just worked out best…It’s like Sam Houston’s campus technically still which is nice, so it’s easy for Sam Houston students to get to.”
All the money that is raised from the event will be given to the Sigma Sigma Sigma Foundation.
The crawfish boil is scheduled for Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Pre-sale tickets are no longer available, but event admission can be purchased at the door for $30. Admission includes all-you-can-eat crawfish.
