No. 35 Sam Houston State men’s golf is in second heading into today’s last round at the Jim West Intercollegiate in Bastrop.
Senior Zach Cabra holds a tie for third in the individual leaderboard with Louisiana Monroe’s Mason Seaborn.
Cabra began the first round well, shooting two-under. He had six birdies in the opening round with only a triple-bogey hindering his score. In the second round, Cabra shot another six birdies with three bogeys to end the round three-under. He enters the third round a shot behind leaders rival Pep Angles of Central Arkansas and Stephen F. Austin State’s Blake Pugh.
Sophomore transfer Andrew Ertel ended day one of the tournament only two shots behind his teammate at sixth place. After hitting 69 in the first round, he shot for par in the second.
SHSU had the lead for a majority of day one. The Bearkats ended the first round with the best team score at 282. The Kats saw some slips in the second round that saw Saint Mary’s jump ahead to first place. Saint Mary’s leads the Bearkats by two strokes while SHSU is seven strokes ahead of the third place share between SFA and Arkansas-Little Rock.
Freshman Jake McCrory shot two strokes under in the first round to tie after one round with Cabra. Shooting three strokes over in the second, McCrory fell to 17th place. Bearkat seniors J.T. Taylor and Logan Boatner had opposites scores in the first two rounds to end tied for 35th, shooting four-over.
The Kats will tee-off with Saint Mary’s, UALR and SFA around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
