Senior Sarah Allison hit a game-winner right up the middle to bring senior Jessica Slater home in the 11th inning and earn the 6-5 victory for Sam Houston State over Texas Southern on Wednesday.
Both teams were tied at one following the first inning. The Kats answered the Tigers’ run with an RBI double from SHSU junior Tiffany Castillo. The Kats took the lead in the second with an RBI single from junior Angelica Gonzalez.
Castillo added another insurance run in the fifth inning with a solo bomb over the left-center field wall. It was Castillo’s fifth homerun of the season and the 20th of her career.
The Tigers tied things up in the sixth inning off an SHSU error followed by an RBI single from Krystalani Yockman. Sophomore Brianna Parker knocked a two-run homerun with two outs in the final inning to a commanding 5-3 lead.
Allison knocked a sac-fly with two outs to cut the Tigers’ lead to one. The Kats then manage to tie the game off a passed ball to force the game to go to extra innings.
In extras, it was all quiet until the Allison’s walk-off hit.
SHSU senior Haley Baros started for the Kats and pitched six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. Senior Meme Quinn delivered five innings in relief for the Kats as she struck out three and gave up three hits.
Only one of the five runs by the Tigers was earned as the Kats committed three errors in the game.
The 13-24 Kats resume Southland conference play Friday as SHSU hosts Abilene Christian. Both teams currently sit outside the top six in the SLC as only six teams are taken for the SLC tournament.
The Kats and Wildcats play a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m., and the series concludes Saturday at 3 p.m.
