It’s been bittersweet for the Sam Houston State Women’s Volleyball Team as they traveled to Louisiana this past week.
The Bearkats traveled to Hammond, Louisiana, where they competed against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions and beat them 3 sets to 0 on Thursday night.
A key player in this matchup was Jordyn Vaughn, as she led her team’s offense with 14 kills.
Clearly, a previous ankle injury was nothing but a minor setback for this sophomore as she dominated the court in kills.
“It feels great to be back on the court competing with my team,” Vaughn said. “It’s frustrating being sidelined with an injury but I’m very excited to be back and help my team in anyway I can.”
Surely, Vaughn wasn’t the only player to be recognized that night.
Good friend and teammate, Brooke White had 8 kills and Madison Cunningham racked up six.
Defensively, Claire Kilpatrick had 16 digs.
Overall, this was a successful match and boosted the Bearkats’ confidence heading into their next game on Saturday.
Unfortunately, the match against New Orleans did not result in the way the Bearkats had hoped.
“I think if we would have maintained our intensity all throughout the match we could have come out with a win,” Vaughn said.
New Orleans gave the Bearkats their eighth loss of the season.
It might have not been the team’s strongest performance, but senior and captain, Michelle Griffith, showed her strength on assisting her teammates.
Although it’s been a rollercoaster of a season for the Bearkats, they haven’t let their losses upset their vision.
“Our goal is to finish strong,” Vaughn said. “I think we’re coming together and peaking at the right time to make a run at the championship.”
Coming up this week the Bearkats will take on the number one, Texas A&M Corpus-Christi. Luckily, the team has already taken on the Islanders in a previous conference match. Although they lost 3-0, the Bearkats have a second chance to fix their mistakes and take a win on Thursday night.
Saturday will be just as exciting as Sam Houston State takes on Houston Baptist University here in Huntsville.
Following this last week of conference play, the Bearkats are headed for Conway, Arkansas, in hopes of being Conference Tournament champions.
