What a week it’s been for the Sam Houston State Women’s Volleyball team.

This past week, the Bearkats hosted Texas A&M- Corpus Christi at home.

The number one Islanders defeated the Bearkats 3 to 2 in a five set match and SHSU fans were anything but quiet.

Considering the Bearkats lost to the Islanders 3-0 earlier in the season, they didn’t let up easy and made it tough for their opponents Thursday night.

“It was pretty exciting to almost beat the number one team,” freshman Taylor Cunningham said. “Just going into the game we felt like we had nothing to lose so we just went out there and had fun.”

Cunningham is a 5-foot-11 Huntsville native that contributed 10 kills to her team’s 70 against the Islanders. Her teammates Shelby Genung added 13 while Jordyn Vaughn posted 21.

Since the Bearkats already went head-to-head against Corpus back in Octorber, they knew what they needed to do.

“The first time we played Corpus we actually played very well but never finished,” Taylor Cunningham said. “I feel we did a better job of finishing the sets we just made too many mistakes in the fifth set.”

Cunningham was right. Sam Houston State accounted for 34 attacking mistakes while Corpus only had a third of that (11).

Additionally, Houston Baptist visited SHSU Huntsville as they competed at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

The Bearkats schooled the Huskies 3-1 on Saturday.

The win wasn’t the only big news of the night as sophomore, Brooke White, had 22 kills. This wasn’t only a season-high record for White, but also for her team.

After this weekend, the Bearkats earned their place in the Southland Conference Tournament as the seventh seed.

This weekend the team will head to Conway, Arkansas. Their first game will be against the second place, UCA Bears. Back in October, the Bears defeated the Bearkats 3 to 0. Yet, that hasn’t stopped the team from thinking positively.

“We are very positive about this weekend,” Cunningham said. “We plan to be there until Sunday and bring home the championship.”

Although Sam Houston State didn’t have their strongest regular season, nothing is standing in their way of winning a ring.

It should be a tough weekend for this team as they have a chance to reface the Corpus Christi Islanders.

The Bearkats’ road to a championship starts this Friday at 6:30 p.m. and don’t forget to wish them luck.
