Sam Houston State University senior Carly Dyess was awarded Major of the Year at the SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators) National Convention and Expo in Nashville on March 22.

The award is given to undergraduate students in health, physical education, recreation and dance professions that have proven to be the overall best in their field.

“Being recognized for this award has truly opened my eyes so much more to what my future holds,” Dyess said. “I am very self-driven, hardworking, and motivated to be the best I can be.

Dyess was nominated by Dr. Jose A. Santiago, a Kinesiology associate professor at SHSU.

“She is truly committed to her education and demonstrates characteristics and skills of a quality physical educator,” Santiago said.

According to Dyess, she appreciates the recognition for her hard work and is honored to receive such a prestigious award.

“I am truly humbled to have been chosen by Dr. Santiago to receive this award on behalf of Sam Houston State University and the Kinesiology department,” Dyess said.

Dyess is graduating December 2018 with a Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology and plans to pursue a career in public education and coaching.

“After receiving this award and attending the SHAPE National Convention, I am motivated more than ever to be the best physical educator I can be and to help students live healthy, active lifestyles,” Dyess said.
