The Conroe JCPenney is collaborating with the College of Business Administration (COBA) and Career Services to present the first JCPenney Suit-Up Event on Sept. 9 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. to give discounts on clothes, beauty and headshots exclusively to SHSU students.
Students who bring their Sam ID will receive 40 percent off men’s and women’s career dress apparel and shoes, a free hair consultation and hair care mini from the salon, a free mini makeover and sample from Sephora inside JCPenney and professional headshots starting at a discounted $30. Attendees can also fill out a raffle ticket and register to win a $50 JCPenney gift card.
JCPenney chose SHSU because the company feels they have a lot to offer students. JCPenney General Manager Becky Kuntscher believes whether it is clothes, makeup, hair or photos for professional profiles, the store can cater to students.
“We can do it all,” Kuntscher said. “A lot of students probably don’t know that, and I think if they came in and see what we have to offer, they would be quite surprised at what they can find.”
SHSU Alumna and event promoter Kellie Spears believes this event will aid in students attaining internships and job opportunities.
“Students who are well dressed and put together will come across as professional and confident,” Spears said. “Making a good impression will set the tone for their relationship with professionals. This opportunity to purchase appropriate attire at reasonable prices will better equip students in the interview process and beyond.”
Event promoter Whitney Arnic believes first impressions are more important than people may think.
“When a professional interviews a student, the student’s ability to articulate their abilities is important, but the interviewer also needs to take heed to how a student presents themselves,” Arnic said. “In many cases, the student and future employee is the first face of the company. Therefore, it is essential that the employer has confidence in the way their future employee presents themselves.”
According to Arnic, budget should not have to hinder professionalism.
“It’s important to make business attire accessible and affordable because it relieves the stress students may have when transitioning in to the workplace,” Arnic said. “When a student feels comfortable and confident in how they look, they will perform well. Many students hold a job in addition to school and manage many responsibilities. This is one less thing students have to stress about.”
