Now that it is October and midterms are approaching, that means college students will endure more stress than normal. In order for us to succeed and do effectively on our upcoming assignments, we have to make sure we are taking care of ourselves and fueling our bodies. If you do not have a meal plan or the means to support yourself for a meal, the Sam Houston State University Food Pantry is here to serve students.
The SHSU Food Pantry’s mission statement is “to support students who struggle with food insecurity, to encourage an educational understanding of food insecurity, and to provide a space for students to volunteer and network with their peers.” College is expensive enough, but you should not have to sacrifice food. This is another on-campus organization/ resource available to all students.
If you are seeking to receive food from the Food Pantry, follow these simple steps below.
- Open the “Students” tab in MySAM
- Under “Student Assistance”, click the “Food Pantry” link
- Bring SAM ID and a bag to the Food Pantry on distribution day
- Requests must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on the day before distribution. Distributions are usually held on the 2nd Thursday and 4th Monday of each month, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Distribution day takes place in Academic Building III room 113. For easy access, enter through the doors closest to the Farrington Building.
With this being an on-campus organization, students help run this resource and have meetings for those who are interested in learning more about what the SHSU Food Pantry is. You can attend their bi-weekly meetings on Tuesdays in LSC Room 319. If you are looking to donate food to the Food Pantry, there are donation boxes located around campus. The members of the organization will pick up the donations bi-weekly on Fridays. There are many ways you can get involved with the Food Pantry. The SHSU Food Pantry is also very confidential; therefore, you will not be judged or shamed for receiving food.
No one should have to suffer from hunger, especially while juggling classes.
Take care of yourself and feed your body the fuel it needs to keep going. Make a difference in your life and someone else’s.
The next upcoming distribution day is October 22nd from 2-8 p.m.
