The Sam Houston State University Bearkats came up short against the Lamar Cardinals 41-23 Saturday afternoon in Beaumont.
The Bearkats (who fell to 4-3) suffered their second loss of conference play this season, with the run defense being a major culprit. The Cardinals racked up 435 combined rushing yards from five different running backs in the contest, led by sophomore Myles Wanza who had 15 carries for 168 yards and two touchdowns.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Brock started his fourth straight game this season and played efficiently with 303 passing yards on 27/56 passing. Brock also compiled two touchdowns and one interception in the game for a quarterback rating of 101.9.
The Bearkats were hot early with the contributions of senior wide receiver Davion Davis. With Davis’ two first quarter touchdowns, he passed SFA’s Cordell Roberson for the all-time career touchdown record in Southland Conference history with 40 touchdowns to date. Davis finished the game with 13 receptions for 162 yards and two touchdowns.
The Bearkats rushing game netted only 79 yards, with sophomore Kyran Jackson leading the Bearkats with 13 carries for 50 of those 79 team rushing yards and one touchdown.
SHSU’s next contest is their Homecoming game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bowers Stadium when they take on the Southeastern Louisiana Lions.
