The women’s lacrosse team, a club sport at Sam Houston State University, made the Texas state championship this year for the first time in school history.

The team concluded their seven-game season with a matchup against Tulane University in Louisiana. On the way home, they received the exciting news that they would be competing in the state championship at Southern Methodist University.

Despite losing to Texas Christian University, senior midfielder Kaitlyn Morrow said the experience is something the team can definitely build on.

“I feel like now that we know we can make it to championships, we will have that mindset next year,” Morrow said. “[That] will motivate us more to really hone in on our lacrosse skills and conditioning for the future.”

Morrow came to SHSU in Fall 2017 and learned out about the lacrosse program, found them on Instagram, and was hooked after attending their first practice.

“The other ladies and our coach [graduate student Cassandra Bailey] are so nice and make playing the sport fun yet challenging,” Morrow said. “Being that I’m also in ROTC here at SHSU, it helps me stay in shape and meet a great group of students.”

Program advisor and SHSU professor LeeAn Muns was thrilled about the women’s success this season.

“I am very, very, very proud of these young ladies,” Muns said. “They have worked extremely hard to get this far.”

The program is always looking for anyone interested in lacrosse.

“All semester we struggled with numbers and having enough players,” Morrow said. “But we didn’t let that deter us, and [we] always tried our hardest.”
