Sam Houston State University Staff Council and Faculty Senate have rescheduled the annual People and Pets Food Drive for Thursday, Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Mall. 

The Rita B. Huff Humane Society is a no-kill animal shelter dedicated to protecting animals and helping them find new homes in Walker County and neighboring counties.

“Any non-perishable food items for the SHSU Food Pantry and the animal shelter accepts dry and wet food,” Staff Council Special Events Co-Chair Candace Prater said. “Rita B. Huff can be contacted about any additional pet donations other than food that they may be in need of. Such as leashes, collars, etc.”

The food drive is open to donations from anyone from on or off campus. Along with helping animals, the people food drive benefits the food pantry on campus.

The event is an opportunity for Staff Council, Faculty Senate and the campus as a whole to make a difference in someone’s life.

“I think by Staff Council getting involved in areas of need in our community it allows us to give back and to demonstrate the SHSU motto ‘A measure of a life is its service’,” Prater said.  “I love seeing all the SHSU departments and people come together to show their generosity and support the people and pets in our community. In previous years, Staff Council and Faculty Senate have collected up to 1,000 pounds in people food and 800 in pet food.”

There is also a little added bonus for those who are most committed.

“The department who donates the most combined people and pet food wins breakfast for their department,” Prater said. “People food in weight is doubled for the purpose of the contest. Pet food is counted as its actual weight.”
