It has been 22 years since the release of “Selena,” the biographical drama that silhouetted singer and actress, Jennifer Lopez, into stardom. She gained fame for powerfully portraying Selena Quintanilla’s journey to musical success. In December 2018, Netflix teased a scripted series with a new actress, further detailing the late singer’s life. Now, nearly a year later the anticipation heightens with a new sneak peek.
According to Netflix, this two-part series is a coming of age story following Selena Quintanilla as her dreams come true and all the heart-wrenching and life-changing choices she and her family make as they navigate success, family and music.
A recently released teaser introduces Christian Serratos, an actress best known for her role as Rosita Espinosa in the AMC series “The Walking Dead,” as Selena. Serratos embraces Quintanilla’s signature bold red lipstick and iconic sparkly purple jumpsuit as she graces the stage using her own vocals, not Selena’s.
As with others, my excitement brews for this project. It will be refreshing to see a more detailed presentation of the late singer’s life that highlights the somber reality that Quintanilla possessed an enriching gift that was only in the beginning stages of growth when she passed away. In a short amount of time, she defined musical stardom, winning a Grammy for “Best Mexican-American Album” in 1994 and influencing many who discovered her discography. Her ambiance reigns heavily, and with this upcoming project it’ll be amazing to see listeners of a new generation discover her bountiful elegance and fall in love with the music that has deemed her a Tejano legend.
Though an exact launch date has yet to be released for this series, its first installment is due to hit Netflix in 2020.
