The first city council meeting of September focused on the creation of both an Emergency Preparedness Month and Huntsville Texas Pride Day.

Members of the organization Huntsville Texas Pride were present for the proclamation. Mayor Andy Brauninger explained the history and significance of pride and how it started with the Stonewall riots in New York City.

“Huntsville Texas Pride’s mission is dedicated to creating a safe space for LGBTQ people and their allies in the Huntsville, Texas area to connect, to express themselves and to celebrate what makes all of us special,” Brauninger said.

The first Pride Day will be on Sept. 19 from 5-7 p.m. and the event will be conducted through Zoom and Facebook Live. For questions or concerns about the event, contact President Nick Ransford at nick@htxp.org or Director of PR Madison Schackmuth at madison@htxp.org.

Emergency Preparedness Month will be celebrated each September with the 2020 theme being “Resolved to be Ready.” The focus will be on preparing for different emergencies from hurricanes to pandemics with disaster preparedness kits in homes.

“It is important to stand ready by staying informed and following instructions from local officials and emergency management personnel,” Brauninger said.

He encouraged all residents to follow the Ready Huntsville messaging on the city website and social media platforms.

The next city council meeting will be on Sept. 15.
