There is a buzz in the air over unfinished business within the Supreme Court. On Oct. 19, the Supreme Court agreed to review actions that involve the construction of a southern border wall with Defense Department funds and requirements that asylum seekers must wait in Mexico while their requests are processed.

While questions of legality should definitely be a focus, a wall along the southern border seems like an empty gesture.

The current administration seems to be highly focused on smuggling activities from the drug cartels. Smugglers have outsmarted Border Patrol using methods such as tunneling, catapults and making marijuana look like carrots, according to the BBC and CNN.

Drugs are not the only products smuggled through the border. Human trafficking is also a source of income for some groups.

If the construction of the border wall were to be completed, these criminal organizations would just find another means of smuggling products to their consumers.

Threat of criminal elements such as the drug cartels along the border is real. We must ensure that those who are coming here are law-abiding and won’t pose a threat to our communities. To allow open borders would be a mistake.

However, it is important to understand that the fabric of this nation derives from immigrants coming here to build a better life for their families. It is a shared experience for all groups within this country, except for those of indigenous descent, and we need to ensure that those who want to come here for a better life are allowed that privilege.

The border wall has had little impact as individuals have been able to climb over using rope ladders, according to The Washington Post, demonstrating the ingenuity and dedication of these immigrants to enter the country.

There needs to be some kind of program or policy in place to allow immigrants to enter and work if they so wish. A program like this could allow immigrants to work, build wealth and continue their journey toward citizenship.
