The Sam Houston women’s basketball team defeated the Abilene Christian University Wildcats 88-72 Wednesday night to move to 3-2 on the season.

Not only was this a big win for the Bearkats, but junior guard Amber Leggett also reached 1,000 career points, being the second Bearkat to reach the milestone in as many weeks.

Leggett left the win over Lamar University last week with 999 career points, setting up a homecoming for her career milestone. It came early in the game with an offensive rebound and a putback shot. She is the 18th player in program history to reach the milestone.

Leggett led the team with 31 points on the night, followed by senior guard Faith Cook with 17, senior forward Courtney Cleveland with 14 and junior forward Madelyn Batista with 13 off the bench. Sophomore forward Kaylee Jefferson led the team with seven rebounds. The win pushed the Bearkats to 7-4 overall in Southland Conference play, their 3rd conference win in a row.

Coach Ravon Justice’s up-tempo attack on offense and defense was on full display, forcing 22 turnovers while the Bearkats only committed nine. The Bearkats shot 41.7% from three while holding the Wildcats to 14.3% from deep. Cook led the Bearkats with three made three-pointers in the contest, all very timely shots that upped the lead as Abilene Christian attempted to make a run.

Abilene Christian, 2-1 conference 9-3 overall, lost their first conference game of the season. Senior forward Alyssa Adams finished with 27 points for the Wildcats. While they whittled the lead down to five midways through the second quarter, the Bearkats had a response for the majority of the Wildcats scores and were ultimately up by 12 at halftime.
