The Sam Houston men’s basketball team defeated the A&M Corpus Christi Islanders 75-70 in a narrow victory Wednesday night. With this win on the road, the Bearkats have now won 10 games in a row.
Freshman guard Bryce Monroe hit two free throws late in the game giving the Bearkats enough cushion in the last couple seconds of the game to hold on to the victory.
With this victory, the Bearkats will stay undefeated in the Southland Conference moving their record 7-0. This will move their overall record to 13-5, a change of pace after beginning the season 0-3.
Along with the Bearkats winning streak, senior guard Demarkus Lampley is on a hot streak of his own. Lampley led the way scoring 21 points and 4-9 from the three-point range following his 30 point game against Abilene Christian University.
Junior guard Zach Nutall followed second with 18 points, followed by junior forward Tristan Ikpe with 12, and Monroe, with the last two free throws, would come in with 9 points. The Bearkats also had one of their best nights at the free-throw line at 92.3%.
Sam Houston held the lead the majority of the night and never trailed in the first half. The Islanders kept the game close the whole time and only led once in the game with just a little less than 10 minutes in the game with a 10-0 run. The Bearkats would claw their way back with Nutall leading the way with an 8-0 run with three layups himself. They would then keep the lead and end in another victory.
The Bearkats will take on rival school Stephen F. Austin next at 3:00 p.m. on Jan. 31 in Nacogdoches.
