The Sam Houston Bearkats soccer team fell to the Northwestern State University Lady Demons in their season opener 1-0 on Friday night.
This game was the first match the Bearkats soccer team has played since losing to the same Lady Demons in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament back in 2019.
The Bearkats were outshot in the game 17-9, accounting for only one shot in the second half compared to the Lady Demons, eight.
The lone goal came from freshman midfielder Delaney Wells off a corner kick in the 80th minute mark that fell into the center of the box. Wells was able to kick it past sophomore goalkeeper, Tatum Krueger, in the scramble of the corner kick.
Although allowing the one goal, Krueger shined in the Bearkats season opener. Krueger had eight saves in the game, twice as many as the Lady Demons.
Freshman forward, Landri Townsend, also played well in her collegiate debut accounting for half of the Bearkats shots on goal with two.
The Bearkats look to bounce back in their next matchup as they travel to face off the Southeastern Louisiana University Lions at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19 in Hammond, Louisiana.
