Sam Houston State University’s Black Film Society will host its first in-person film festival on Friday, April 16. Since February, the organization has been working on making this endeavor an interactive experience for student filmmakers. 

Though they have only been on campus for three years, the Black Film Society intends to make an impact for much longer than that. They have created a collaborative space that amplifies African American contributions in the film industry and encourages aspiring film students to expand their creativity. 

After a year of social distancing and virtual meetings, the group wanted to create something that blended well with their mission and a festival does just that. According to the Black Film Society Vice President Ayana Duncan, the society wants students of all majors to witness this experience. 

“We are trying to invite as many people to submit stuff they are proud of as possible,” Duncan says. “Don’t think of it as just a film festival, think of it as a showcase for all mass communication students.”

The event’s lineup will consist of independent work from undergrad and graduate students. Those interested have until April 14 to submit their projects for clearance. According to Duncan, if this first year is a success, they are interested in making this festival an annual event. 

“Expect more from us in the future,” Duncan said. “We are looking forward to planning more events and offering more for students.”

The in-person festival will take place in the Ron & Linda Mafrige Auditorium from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. For everyone’s safety, masks are required to be worn at all times and hand sanitizers will be provided.
