Sam Houston Recreational sports offers many programs and activities for students looking to get in shape or just stay active. The Rec Center offers many fitness classes such as zumba, yoga, barre toning and cycling. Each class is offered multiple times and runs from Sept. 8 to Dec. 8.
“Now that we are back from Covid we have full capacity in our weight rooms.” supervisor and equipment manager Amber Garcia said.
To get involved in classes the Sam Houston Rec sports page offers different times to participate in the fitness classes. In person registration is also available.
Each event has different instructors for each class and time, giving students options to work with their schedule.
On the website people can also see how many others have already registered or are interested in going so no one goes alone. Students can also share the invite with friends to join in the workout of people’s choosingMost of these activities are brought to students as a SHSU student for free and to be a member is free through being a SHSU student. Although, for the fitness classes it is $40 to register and attend these classes.
The Rec is also hosting a REC-O-WEEN which is seven crazy workouts based around Halloween, and if students go to four of the seven workouts, they can be entered to win prizes. These events will all be Halloween themed and give people a fun free way to get a good workout in.
One of the main things offered is sunset yoga on the last Tuesday of every month in the LSC Yard. An easy, free way to let people’s stress melt away at the end of the month as students prepare for a new month of school.
“We also offer Rock wall fitness classes, personal training and intramural and club sports. The climbing wall is also free and open on Thursdays to everybody,” Garcia said.
All of this is offered to people as a student through Sam Houston State University. It is important to know what students are paying for as a student and use the benefits others receive through paying tuition.
