The Sam Houston Bearkat soccer team went 2-0 over the weekend as they played their first home conference games in their Western Athletic Conference (WAC) campaign.
The Sam Houston Bearkat soccer team (3-2 conference) defeated the Chicago State Cougars, (0-5) 5-0 in the first home game against a team in the Western Athletic Conference.
The Bearkats had 18 total shots with nine coming in each half. They had 11 shots on goal and five of those shots scoring in the net. The first goal came early in the fourth minute of the game with a shot by senior forward Grace Stine.
Two more goals were scored in the first half, one coming in the 29th minute and the other in the 42nd minute. Junior forward Brooke Jones made the second goal in the bottom right corner of the net and freshman midfielder Summer Knox made the third goal in the top right corner.
The Cougars had a total of six shots, the first not coming until the 20th minute of the game. The other five shots were made in the second half of the game but none were successful.
The last two goals of the game came in the second half of the game. In the 70th minute, sophomore forward Alexis Truitt scored her second goal of the season. Senior forward Jade Dewbre capped the scoring with an end of game goal to officially seal the victory for the Bearkats.
The Bearkats went on to win their second home game of the weekend against the Abilene Christian University Wildcats 2-1.
During the first period the Bearkats kept good control of the ball and were the first to get on the scoreboard. Junior forward Lexi Primacio got the Bearkats on the scoreboard very early in the game and was assisted by sophomore forward Landri Townsend. This was Primacio’s first goal of the season.
Townsend scored the second goal for the Bearkats in the 12th minute of the game and was assisted by junior forward Brooke Jones. This was Townsend’s third goal of the season, the first two were against Grambling State University earlier in the season.
Both teams were equally matched during the second half, and both were looking to score before time ran out. Abilene Christian received a yellow card after they were already given a warning in the 59th minute of the game.
There were many attempts at goals in the second half, but none were making it in for the Wildcats, thanks to junior goalkeeper Tatum Krueger for the Bearkats. Krueger made 10 saves by the end of the game against Abilene Christian.
Sam Houston led the scoring in the first half of the game and fought back hard during the second half. Abilene Christian scored a goal in the 84th minute of the game but the Bearkats fought back control to keep ACU from scoring again.
After the goal by the Wildcats, the Bearkats defense kept the ball on the ACU side of the field and prevented the Wildcats from scoring anymore goals. This defense sealed the victory for the Sam Houston Bearkats thanks to a game-saving stop from Krueger.
Sam Houston will play Lamar University at home Friday, Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. against the Cardinals.
