The Sam Houston Bearkats continued with their winning ways Saturday against Dixie State University in a commanding 59-10 victory.
The No. 1 Bearkats scored in every aspect of the game with offense, defense and special teams each scoring touchdowns to help ease the Kats to the win.
The offense did its usual damage, compiling 408 yards on the ground and 597 total yards. Five different Bearkat running backs scored on the ground, including freshman running back Weston Stephens who led the way with 90-rushing yards and a touchdown that came late in the fourth quarter.
The other Bearkat running backs that scored on the ground were junior Ramon Jefferson, freshman Zach Hrbacek, sophomore Noah Smith and senior Kyran Jackson.
Sam Houston got started quickly with their first possession resulting in junior quarterback Eric Schmid finding fifth-year senior tight end Isaac Schley from five yards out for his first career touchdown as a Kat.
Dixie State got the ball and quarterback Kobe Tracy threw one incomplete pass, then on the next play he fumbled on the Dixie State 3-yard line and senior defensive end Jahari Kay scooped it up and trotted three yards for the touchdown. Just like that the game was 14-0, with 10:28 remaining in the first quarter.
The Trailblazers put together a solid 75-yard drive on their next possession and got into field range to attempt a 42-yard field goal. The kick was blocked by senior starting cornerback Zyon McCollum as he came careening around the edge and got a hand on it. The other starting senior cornerback Jaylen Thomas, scooped the ball off the turf and returned it 64 yards for a touchdown to make it a 21-0 ballgame in the first quarter.
The Bearkats continued pouring it on, with Jefferson scoring from 23 yards out towards the end of the first quarter to make it 28-0. They put up 17 more in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 45-0 advantage.
The third quarter saw Hrbacek get his opportunity, and he did not squander it. The freshman tailback got the handoff and took off down the right sideline for 64 yards, out pacing Dixie State defenders along the way. This made the game 52-0, the Bearkats biggest lead of the game.
Dixie State made a 23-yard field goal in the third quarter to get on the board and eventually scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter well after Sam Houston was playing its backups.
Freshman wide receiver Derrick Rose led Sam Houston in receiving yards with 57.
Sam Houston returns to Bowers Stadium this Saturday, Nov. 13 at noon, as they take on the Eastern Kentucky University Colonels.
