The Lamar University Cardinals handed the Bearkats women’s basketball team their second loss of the conference season 68-55. This was also the Bearkats’ second loss at home overall since the start of the season.
The Bearkats never led at any point during the game after the first basket was scored, 19 seconds into the first quarter. The only quarter Sam Houston won was the third quarter in which they outscored the Cardinals 15-14.
Junior forward Madelyn Batista led the way scoring 19 points and six rebounds on 70% shooting from the field. The Bearkats had two other players in double-figures with junior forward Damaya Telemaque and senior guard Faith Cook.
The Bearkats fought back in the fourth quarter cutting the lead down to only four points thanks to a Cook three-pointer. The Cardinals answered with an 11-4 run to put the deficit back to double-digits, and they never looked back.
Sam Houston shot 33% from the field for the game compared to Lamar, who shot 49% on the game.
Lamar was able to dominate the game in the paint as they scored 46 of their 68 points under the basket. The Bearkats only scored 18 of their points under the basket.
The Bearkats will be looking to get their first road win of the season in their first conference away game as they travel to Nacogdoches, Texas, to take on rival Stephen F. Austin University on Saturday.
