The Sam Houston Bearkat women’s basketball season opened with a loss Tuesday night as they fell to the Auburn Tigers 90-76.
The Bearkats (0-1,0-0) fought the entire game against the Tigers (1-0,0-0). The SEC powerhouse found itself only up 22-18 against Sam Houston after the end of the first quarter.
Auburn however, would go on to outscore the Bearkats over the second and third quarters 51-31. The Bearkats outscored Auburn 27-17 in the fourth quarter but it was not enough to overcome the scoring outbursts from the Tigers.
Graduate transfer guard Chyna Allen led the Bearkats in scoring with 15 points. Senior forward Madelyn Batista and freshman guard Adriana Djokovic had 10 points each. Batista had eight rebounds.
Reshirt sophomore guard Mikayla Woods had six points and seven rebounds.
The Bearkats did keep it close with Auburn. It is the first game with a lot of new faces and going up against a SEC school is going to be a tough task regardless.
Sam Houston will head back home to Huntsville, TX for their next two games. They will face the Texas State Bobcats on Nov. 12 with tip-off scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
You can catch the game live on “ESPN+” and on the radio on 90.5 KSHU.
