SHSU Bearkat Battalion
The Sam Houston State University Army ROTC gathered in the Lowman Student Center White Ballroom on Thursday for the 2022 Bearkat Batallion Fall Awards Ceremony. Cadets received awards in more than 15 categories and $12,000 in scholarships based on their performance in the classroom, leadership and participation in the battalion’s activities.
Lieutenant Colonel Joshua Limberg, SHSU professor of military science, said the semester has been great and full of learning and accomplishment. Cadet Battalion Commander Julian Monroig and Battalion Command Sergeant Major Deena Stone echoed this sentiment throughout the ceremony.
“I’m incredibly proud of all the cadets. They have worked hard and grown over the semester,” said Stone.
The ceremony recognized the Battalion Army ten-miler team that competed on October 9 in Washington D.C. where they completed the run in approximately one hour and 40 minutes. The five-person team received certificates of appreciation for representing the university and the ROTC program.
Another group recognized is the Ranger Challenge team, which competed at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma, achieving 4th place out of ten competing teams.
Also recognized were the Captain Rowdy Inman Memorial Award recipients, Cadets Emily Slott and Kynnyth Leblanc. The annual Captain Rowdy Inman Memorial 5k funds the award and scholarship. The 5k this year raised $7,000, providing funding for future scholarships.
This semester’s top cadet award for each class, MS1 (Freshman), MS2 (Sophmore), and MS3 (Junior), was chosen by the instructors for cadets with outstanding performance in academics, physical fitness, and contributing to the program. The top cadet awards are MS1 Jackson Hyams, MS2 Tanner Stone, and MS3 Cinnamon Wright-Burwinkel.
One of the other awards presented was the SHSU ROTC Program Dedication award and scholarship. LTC Limbers identified recipients based on dedication and loyalty to the battalion. The cadets that received this award were Nicholas Watson and Cody Weeks.
Many other cadets’ performances received awards in other areas, such as the color guard, cannon crew, volunteerism, mentorship and tactical proficiency. The ceremony was filled with applause and laughter as presenters and recipients told stories and shared memories from the fall semester.
