HUNTSVILLE – After dropping game one of a doubleheader to the Stephen F. Austin softball team 3-1, the Sam Houston State University softball team secured a 6-0 win in game two Friday night.
Starting pitcher Emma Guindon got the win, moving her season record to 5-7 on the season.
Guindon pitched all seven innings and finished the game allowing four hits, zero runs and four strikeouts.
“We worked really hard on our approach this week and how I was going to go at the batters,” Guindon said. “It was really gratifying seeing that come out in the game.”
In the bottom of second inning, the runs began piling in for the Bearkats.
With runners on first and third base, Haleigh Carter stepped up to the plate. Carter smacks the ball for a groundout RBI, and advances a runner to second base. The next batter, Brodie Quinlan, hits a single to third base and sets up runners on first and third base.
Emily Telg took advantage, crushing an RBI single into right field and put runners on first and second base. The final run of the inning came from an RBI Single that was shot down the middle of the field by Ellie Grill. The Bearkats would head into the third inning with a 3-0 lead.
After a scoreless third and fourth inning, the Bearkats added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Hannah Scheaffer started the scoring with an RBI off a bunt and set up runners on first and third base. Carter got her second RBI of the game after hitting a double down center field.
The Bearkats ended the fifth inning up 5-0.
The final run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Elia Hebel smacks a ball for an RBI double.
“Really happy with the way we responded to not playing well in the first game,” SHSU head coach Garrett Valis said. “We did a better job of throwing strikes in the circle and making them earn what they got.”
The Bearkats are set to play their next home game Saturday, April 15 against Stephen F. Austin. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
“Really focused on getting a series win tomorrow and getting on the right side of a conference record,” Valis said. “We have to keep taking advantage of the opportunities we have and playing consistently.”
