Sam Houston State’s track and field team had several impressive performances this weekend as the Bearkats traveled to Austin for the 88th annual Texas Relays.

Junior thrower Elizabeth Lyssy won first in the university section B of the women’s Javelin throw to become the third woman in school history to throw farther than 155 ft.

“I felt really blessed to be able to go to the Relays, but I knew there would be a lot of good competition, and I had to be ready to perform,” Lyssy said.

With a throw of 156’ 1” on her first attempt, Lyssy threw nearly 10 feet farther than her previous personal record of 147’.

Although this is her farthest mark to date, she still plans to keep working hard to improve even further as the season progresses.

“My coaches and I have been working on a bunch of stuff and it really paid off this weekend which was exciting, but there are still things I need to improve on,” Lyssy said.

In the hammer throw, junior Ashley Jenkins and senior Adrian Quillin both posted top 10 finishes.

On the sprinters side, junior Danielle Demas broke the school record in the women’s 100-meter hurdle final. With a time of 13.16, Demas placed 6th overall.

The men’s sprint medley also broke the school record with a time of 3:17.79. This event highlighted anchor leg freshman Jeffery Moore, who ran an impressive 800-meter split time of 1:49. The men’s sprint medley finished 6th overall.

Bearkat Track and Field will now head to Houston this weekend for the Victor Lopez Rice Invitational.
