The Recreational Sports Center is closed following heavy storms that caused the partial collapse of one of the building’s walls.
Senior music education major Sonia Nieto was in the center when the wall began to break under the force.
“I came running because I thought someone was hurt,” Nieto said. “Then all of a sudden it was just like a waterfall just pouring out over here at the window.”
Nieto said people standing near the rock wall could see the water rising quickly and, soon after, the windows caved.
“It was just all the pressure, because there was only a couple people down by the rock wall,” Nieto said. “They said they could slowly start seeing the water rise and then the water pressure was just so much it busted the windows.”
According Associate Director of Communications, Julia May, the HKC side of the building will be open Friday for regular business, while the Rec Center side will remain closed indefinitely until the damages are repaired.
May said that the next step is to have a professional cleaning company come tomorrow.
As of now there are no estimated cots of damage to the building, and no injuries were reported.
