Have you ever gotten the feeling of boredom? Or have you felt like your head is going to explode? I know I’ve felt these feelings before and then some. At times, I would hit I-45 leaving Huntsville for The Woodlands, but gas is expensive so I have to make do with in the city of Huntsville. Now I did some research to find some places in Huntsville that I find fun and interesting, and hopefully you’ll find them fun and interesting also.
As we all know, Huntsville is prison city. The Texas Prison Museum sounds like a great place to unwind and discover some interesting things. This museum gives a glimpse into the prisoners’ lives locked up behind bars. This facility has an array of popular exhibits, such as the Unique Audio Exhibit, Capital Punishment Exhibit, Prison Contraband Exhibit, and much more. I haven’t visited the Texas Prison Museum, but I will go down there and catch some knowledge. College students pay an admission fee of $4.00, but we have to show our ID. It is located at 491 State Hwy 75 North. The hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday thru Saturday. And Sundays from 12 pm. to 5 p.m. So if you’re interested, stop by the Texas Prison Museum.
Located across from campus is the Sam Houston Memorial Museum. You can’t miss it. I find this place to be fun and interesting because it gives an intriguing glimpse into the life of General Sam Houston. Also, the museum educates and informs about how he played a role in the city of Huntsville and the state of Texas, and his part in both the city and the university. SHSU students’ admission is FREE! The museums times are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday-Saturday, 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sundays, and closed on Mondays.
If nature relaxes and eases your mind, then the Huntsville State Park is another great place to let your hair down and relax. It’s not too far from campus. It’s a great place for camping, biking, and other fun activities. I haven’t camped since I was a little girl and I had fun; so I should have some great relaxation now. The park is open on Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Now I like art so the Wynne Home Arts Center is another great place for someone who’s an art lover like me to unwind. They offer a variety of programs, including the art exhibits, art classes, workshops and many more. The hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday from Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. It is two blocks away from downtown.
Now there are other beautiful attractions in Huntsville, but I just thought that these facilities I mentioned would be great for students. Just know that these fun places listed aren’t limited. Remember be safe and have fun!
