The Rita B. Huff Humane Society in Huntsville will be conducting one of its many annual fundraisers at the One Legged Crow on November 7. The animal shelter relies on these fundraisers in the hope that it will maintain the operation and life of the humane society.

Executive Director of the Humane Society Marjolein Lemmon explained why the shelter relies on these funds.

“Throughout the year we have several fundraisers to keep the doors open and keep us operating,” Lemmon said. “Though we have government funding and sponsor donations, we have to have fundraisers to make up the difference.”

Several fundraisers are held throughout the year to meet the budget. Many of those donations determine the continuation of the shelter.

“There is really no other way unless private individuals would come up with the money,” Lemmon said. “We take in animals and house and feed them until they are adopted or go back to their owner. We need money just to operate like for water and electricity and to buy food.”

The shelter houses about 4,000 animals yearly. Without the Rita B. Huff shelter, those animals would be in dangerous and unpredictable conditions, according to Lemmon. A harsh reality that Lemmon has dedicated much of her time and effort to discontinue.

“If we weren’t here a lot of them would be dumped and they would get sick or pregnant or ran over,” Lemmon said.

Although the shelter depends on these fundraisers, Lemmon has been a part of the success of The Humane Society for 28 years. She adds that her deep passion is what has contributed to her work with the shelter.

At the Bow Wow Band Jam one can expect performances from local artists such as Black Salad, Doc West, Pip Brown, Valerie Lee, W.L. Kilgore and much more.

The Rita B. Huff Humane Society is hoping to raise about 10,000 dollars at their fundraiser. Pre-sale tickets for the event are $25 and $30 at the door. The doors will open at 7 and the venue will close at normal hours.
