The Sam Houston State softball program has gotten off to a slow 2-4 start, but hope to bounce back during the first home game of the regular season in today’s doubleheader against the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners.
“The season is not going as I hoped,” head coach Bob Brock said. “I still feel really good about this team, but we are ready for Wednesday [today] and we’re pretty excited about playing at home.”
The Bearkats are no strangers to UTSA. Last season, the team faced the Roadrunners in a doubleheader at San Antonio where the Bearkats fell 10-3 and 1-0. This time around, Brock feels the team will have a better chance of defeating UTSA since the matches are the first home games of the season.
“I think playing at home will make a difference,” Brock said. “ We usually play better at home. Plus, it’s nice to be able to open up here in Huntsville since we started out playing on the road.”
UTSA currently holds a 2-5 overall record. The Roadrunners played the No. 23 ranked Baylor last Sunday in Waco at the Getterman Classic where UTSA was defeated in a hard fought battle 7-6. The Roadrunners’ last victory was against the Lamar University Cardinals last Friday. UTSA defeated the Cardinals 6-0.
Last Wednesday, the Bearkats traveled to College Station where they took on the No. 17 Texas A&M. While in College Station, the Bearkats were defeated in a 2-0 shutout, but not without a fight.
The Bearkats had kept the Aggies from scoring until the bottom of the sixth inning. With bases loaded, Texas A&M scored two runs after Aggie freshman Sarah Hudek hit a ball to left field.
“I think we did a pretty good job against A&M, even though we lost” Brock said. “ We were subject to our youngness at times during the game, but we are excited to get out there and play UTSA.”
The Bearkats earned their first pair of wins two weeks ago at the University Louisiana Monroe Mardi Gras Classic against Prairie View A&M 7-5 and Grambling State University 15-0. The team looks to add to its win column with a pair of victories over UTSA today.
The doubleheader against the UTSA Roadrunners will be today at the Bearkat Softball Complex. The first game is at 3 p.m. and the second game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
