The Sam Houston State University softball program will host their last home series of the season against the Abilene Christian University Wildcats this weekend.
Last weekend, the Bearkats captured their first series victory in almost a month after defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 2-1. The victory also moved the Bearkats into a fifth place tie with Southeastern Louisiana and improved their Southland Conference record to 9-9.
“I think the girls did really good this weekend,” head coach Bob Brock said. “We fought hard and we got some hits and took advantage of some mistakes so I thought we did a much better job than previous.”
The Bearkats were defeated 1-0 by the Islanders in game one, but bounced back in game two with a 2-0 win. SHSU went on to clinch the series in game three with a 4-2 victory.
Sophomore pitcher Lindsey McLeod was named Pitcher of the Week by the SLC after she went 2-0 in the circle against the Islanders. The sophomore only allowed three hits all weekend and struck out 19 batters in 16 innings of action.
“My gosh pitching did good this weekend,” Brock said. “Our pitching has been what is keeping us in there.”
This weekend the Bearkats will face off against the Southland’s No. 2 team, Abilene Christian University. The Wildcats are currently on a four game winning streak and hold an overall record of 26-16 and a conference record of 15-3.
While Brock believes ACU will be a tough competitor, he knows the team will execute well.
“I think the team will perform really well,” Brock said. “We just need to concentrate on getting hits in when opportunities come, but I know the girls will work hard. They are getting better all the time, even if it is by an inch.”
The Berkats will host their last home series of the season this weekend against the Wildcats at the Bearkat Softball Complex. Game one of Friday’s double-header will begin at a 3 p.m. and game two will follow at 5 p.m. Game three is set to start at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
