As of March 10, the Paw Print Food Court and the C-store on the second floor of the Lowman Student Center are now closed due to renovations. This includes Chick-Fil-a, Grille Works, Pizza Hut and Subway.
In order to provide more food options to students, SHSU has made some additions to campus that will be available until May 11.
Two food trucks are now on campus and available for students and faculty.
“Due to the LSC closing, Sam Houston dining services saw an opportunity to provide the additional variety of casual eating concepts for the campus,” Associate Vice President of Finance and Operations Tessy Rappé said. “The spring weather and now popular Food Truck venue are the perfect addition.”
A Chick-Fil-a food truck is now located between the College of Humanities and Social Sciences building and the Lee Drain Building. They will be serving chicken sandwiches, chips and bottled beverages from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday-Thursday and 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday’s.
Smoken Sammy’s food truck is another new addition to campus, featuring a five-day rotating menu. Smoken Sammy’s will be located between the CHSS and LDB as well, and open 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. all week.
“Smoken Sammy’s is probably the best thing that’s happened to Sam Houston,” Freshman Mass Communication major Mario Trevino said. “I think Sammy’s is a great edition, because we’ve never had burgers like that.”
A covered seating area with picnic tables and trashcans is available by the food trucks to allow students the option to sit and eat outside but away from the sun. Both food trucks accept Bearkat bucks.
“The Food Trucks are an additional option for dining that allows students to decide whether they prefer a sit-down meal at General’s Market or Old Main Market, or a relaxed, casual meal to enjoy outside or on the go,” Rappé said.
According to Rappé, students’ feedback suggests that the food trucks were a good choice.
“Reactions have been positive to both the concept of a Food Truck alley, the outdoor casual dining experience and the fare offerings,” Rappé said.
In addition, both Old Main Market and General’s Market have reduced the daily price of meals to $7.50 for lunch and dinner.This is a reduction from the normal door rate of $8.50 for lunch and $8.95 for dinner; and includes the grill, deli, salad bar and pizza stations that run from 11 a.m. to close.
The P.O.D.’s locations in the CHSS and LDB, Starbucks, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Einstein’s and the C.J. Café are still available and open during their regular posted hours.
Both the P.O.D. Express and C.J. Café will now offer an enhanced “grab-n-go” program including a wider selection of sandwiches, salads and parfaits for eating on the go, along with Sushic for student convenience.
A full-service Chick-fil-a, larger Subway and Panda Express are expected to open in August 2018. A Steak’N Shake, Oath Craft Pizza and campus pub are also expected to open by Spring 2019 as a part of the LSC Expansion.
