The Sam Houston State University Department of Dance will present Masters of Dance April 5-6 at 8 p.m. at the Dance Theatre in the James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center. General admission is $15, seniors $12 and $5 for students with a valid SHSU ID.
Masters of Dance is a collection of diverse works choreographed by eight Master of Fine Arts candidates. Each uniquely inspired piece showcased in the concert will bring something new to the overall feel of the performance.
Some of the highlights from the concert will include Colette Miller’s “Co. De De. Co,” Samantha Scioneaux’s “The Silent Space,” Hannah Scott’s “No Names Pass,” Emily Davis’s “Self-Knowing” and Evelyn Toh’s “Ballad of the Assassins.”
Toh, a second-year graduate dance student, got her inspiration from the film “King Arthur.” The fast-paced film is what captured her attention and what inspired her to choreograph her piece.
“I was inspired to use the sound score and emulate the intense energy I experienced in my choreography,” Toh said.
She and her dancers have been rehearsing every week since the start of the spring semester in order to be prepared for the concert.
Not only will there be a fast-paced performance, but there will also be performances that will feature hanging structure and projection, intricate collaborating and lighting and different movement pathways from simple to complex to be able to tell their story. This semester’s show also features lighting designs from Texas State University graduate students.
The Masters of Dance concert is fully produced by the graduate students of the SHSU Department of Dance. Purchase tickets online at www.shsu.edu/boxoffice or call 936-294-2339.
