The Sam Houston State University football team traveled to Albuquerque as they opened the 2019 season with a 39-31 loss to the New Mexico Lobos.

3Q 12:40| Schmid helped SHSU grab the momentum out of the locker room with a 13-yard touchdown pass to sophomore transfer Toneil Carter. The aerial strike gave the Kats their first lead of the day as they jumped on top 23-22.
3Q 1:02 | After a UNM field goal with 5:12 on the clock, SHSU took a gamble on 4th down and failed to convert. The Bearkats defense gave up a touchdown four plays later and the Lobos had a 32-23 lead at the end of the third quarter.
4Q 13:41 | UNM’s ground game tacked on another touchdown, and the lead swells to 39-23.
4Q 3:01 | Sophomore Donovan Williams punched his way into the end zone with a rushing touchdown for the Kats. Brock connected with Woody Brandom for the two-point conversion to make it a one-possession game down 39-31.
4Q 2:48 | After SHSU recovered an onside kick, Brock and the Bearkats used a little trickery as a flea-flicker to Brandom went for 32 yards. UNM’s defense held strong after that, shutting down SHSU and holding on for a 39-31 victory.
