In elementary school, students learn math, spelling and colors. In those formative years, most students came across the acronym R.O.Y.G.B.I.V. the colors of the rainbow.
This week at Sam Houston State University, the acronym does not only stand for the order the colors appear in the sky. “R.O.Y.G.B.I.V.” is a performance put on by the SHSU department of dance Thursday Oct. 30 and Friday Oct. 31 at 8 p.m. at the Gaertner Performing Arts Center.
The performances will showcase the work of dance choreography graduate students at the event titled R.O.Y.G.B.I.V.
“R.O.Y.G.B.I.V. is the colors of the rainbow, so what I take away from it is that we’re all graduate students and we make up this kind of team or family,” Ashley Clos, SHSU dance graduate student, said. “We are all extremely different and what we bring to the table is very unique from one another. So we are kind of a beautiful rainbow.”
Clos is one of the graduate choreography students whose work will be showcased this week.
“R.O.Y.G.B.I.V. is our semester graduate concert, so its purpose is to kind of prepare graduate students in working with dancers, getting their choreography out there and kind of fine tuning and refining our choreographic skills,” Clos said.
Because the event will be a showcasing of several different people, the styles of dance performed will cover a wide variety of styles and ideas. Students who attend will be able to gain a more broad understanding and exposure to the different styles of dance that exist.
“We have a lot of variation in this concert,” Clos said. “Different points of view, different subject matter and different styles of dancing as far as dynamics go. So you might see a very aggressive and animalistic piece as well in the same concert a beautiful light and airy piece. So it’s kind of like this array of choreography.”
The event is open to all students and members of the community. General Admission tickets are $8 and student tickets are $5 at the Gaertner Performing Arts Center box office or at 936-294-2339.
“We want anyone and everyone to come,” Clos said.
