Ninety minutes and two overtime periods could not settle the score between Sam Houston State soccer and Houston Baptist on Friday at Pritchett Field.

The Bearkats and Huskies played to a scoreless draw, leaving the two teams tied in Southland Conference standings in the race for second place in the SLC tourney.

It was the Kats first overtime of the season after playing extra time in six games in the 2013 season; SHSU lost five of those games. Junior goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton was forced to make five saves in Friday’s tie.

“I just didn’t want to lose in overtime,” Hambleton said. “That’s one thing this team has done. Last year, we lost a lot in overtime. I just didn’t want to lose.”

Although SHSU put up 25 shots against HBU, the Bearkats struggled to find their offensive niche they had developed in the season. The last time SHSU was held scoreless was on Sept. 12 to Utah State.

“We just struggled with that final pass and getting clean opportunities on goal,” head coach Tom Brown said. “I thought most of the opportunities we had on goal were pretty soft.”

HBU’s senior left back Lindsay Matlock contained SHSU’s junior right forwards Ashley Alonzo, Katie Ferrara and sophomore Maddy Panozzo. This limited SHSU’s chances coming from the outside.

“I thought last year [Matlock] gave away a lot more balls than she did tonight,” Brown said. “We were struggling a little bit to get on that end. I thought Panozzo put her under some good pressure in that time that she got in. Hopefully if we get another opportunity at her, we will do better.”

Although SHSU was not able to clinch the second seed with Friday’s result, the Kats still control their own faith in the SLC tournament heading into Sunday’s match with Nicholls State.

A better result than HBU on Sunday gives SHSU the second seed and the first-round bye in the tournament.

SHSU will kickoff at 2 p.m. against Nicholls St. on Sunday at Pritchett Field.
