In hopes of drawing attention to the positive effects biking to campus can have, Sam Houston State University’s Student Government Association will be hosting ‘Bike Day’ on Nov. 5-6.

According to University Affairs Chief Jacqueline Bolden, Bike Day is a campus-wide initiative in hopes of increasing bike safety and awareness at SHSU.

“Biking to school offers an alternative and environmentally friendly way to get to school,” Bolden said. “Student Government Association hopes to make Bike Day an annual event that will increase the number of students who bike to school.”

Students are encouraged to ride their bikes to campus in recognition of this event. However, according to Bolden, that’s not the sole source of participation.

“We are also asking students to voice their concerns about biking here at Sam Houston State University, so our SGA Departments can continue to address biking safety,” Bolden said.

SGA is promoting Bike Day by giving away informational pamphlets as well as free prizes. In addition, SGA will also be offering to register student bikes in accordance with the recent amendment to university policy.

“Bring your bicycle by SGA’s table in front of the LSC and receive freebies and be entered to win a number of giveaways,” Bolden said. “We also have information for bike registration and safety here at Sam Houston.”

Not only does Bike Day promote a healthy environment, but SGA hopes that this event will also relieve the parking dilemma on campus.

“The SGA Department of University Affairs along with the SGA Department of External Affairs have the hopes that Bike Day will offer slight relief to the ongoing parking concerns on campus,” Bolden said.  “Additionally, our SGA departments want to draw awareness to the lack of biking lanes and bike racks on campus. SGA hopes Bike Day will lead to increased support for biking and bikers safety.”

According to SGA officials, the Department of Parking and Transportation will waive all citations for not having a bike permit during the event.
