The Sam Houston men’s baseball team fell to the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners after a hard-fought series losing 2-1.

The Bearkats battled hard in the first home game of the season this past Friday, beating the Roadrunners 4-2. The Bearkats were able to control the game with junior starting pitcher Tyler Davis limiting the Roadrunners to only one run in five innings. Junior utility man Jack Rogers also contributed by hitting three doubles, something a Bearkat baseball player has not done since 2016. With the Roadrunners unable to gain momentum, the Bearkats were able to start the series off 1-0.

Things cooled off by the second game on Saturday, however, as the Bearkats fell to the Roadrunners 10-4. Despite a strong showing in the first inning with the Bearkats scoring two runs, the Roadrunners dominated the second inning, scoring eight runs by the end. Freshman pitcher Logan Hewitt made his collegiate debut keeping the Roadrunners at bay for 2.2 innings, only allowing two hits.

Several impressive showings at-bat were made by the Bearkats, including Rogers, who connected every single time he was at-bat. Freshman third baseman Mason Schulz started his collegiate career off with a bang hitting a solo home run in his college debut. With the series tied 1-1, both the Bearkats and the Roadrunners were looking to clinch the series with a victory on Sunday.

The Roadrunners opened with a strong performance, scoring six runs in five innings before Rogers answered with a two-run homer. Junior third baseman Corbin Vines also hit a two-run homer during the game in the eighth inning. These hits, however, were not enough to hold off the red-hot offense of UTSA. The Roadrunners would go on to close out the game 18-5, clinching the series.

The Bearkats baseball team will be looking to bounce back from their loss when they travel to Waco to take on the Baylor Bears Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.
