The Sam Houston University softball team swept the McNeese State University Cowgirls over the weekend in their first home conference series.
Game one: Starting off with a win
The Bearkats defeated the Cowgirls in a 6-1 pitching, behind a nine-hit day from the team overall.
Sam Houston fell 1-0 after the top of the first inning but responded right away with a run of their own on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and never looked back.
On the other side of the game, the pitching staff backed the hitting up only allowing four hits and one run on the day with sophomore pitcher Regan Dunn starting and freshman pitcher Christine Billmeier finishing the game.
Freshman left fielder Courtney White and sophomore third baseman Kyndal Kutac each had a pair of runs batted in on the game, being responsible for four of the team’s six runs.
Game two: One-hit gem
In the first Saturday game double-header, the Bearkats won the game 6-0 behind a one-hit, six strikeout performance from freshman pitcher Mika Vento. After the performance, Vento is now over .500 on the season with a 3-2 record.
Along with the stellar pitching performance, the Bearkats rallied off 10 hits on the game.
The game was even at 0-0 going into the fourth inning, but the Bearkats opened up the scoring with four runs in that inning, then following it up with two more runs in the fifth.
Freshman catcher Hannah Scheaffer led the way with a pair of RBI’s on the game, which came off a two-run double in the fourth inning.
Game three: Finishing strong
Dunn finished the series off with another stellar pitching performance with a full-game shutout in a 4-0 victory. She only gave up three hits in the game as well as also striking out three. She joins Vento in going over .500 on the season with a 4-3 record.
Not only did Dunn perform on the mound, but she also produced in the batter’s box, hitting a home run to right field in the fifth inning of the ball game.
Freshman first baseman Ellie Grill also had a nice day at the plate with a pair of hits, an RBI and a run scored in the game.
The Bearkats return to the Bearkat Softball Complex on March 23 to take on the No. 24 ranked Baylor University Bears.
