The Bearkats soccer team defeated the Lamar University Cardinals to close out their final home game of the season 2-0. This win gives Sam Houston their fourth straight win of the season and puts them over .500 for the first time this year.
Coming into the game, the Cardinals were first in the conference and coming off only their second loss of the season.
Junior midfielder Ashley Friedrichs opened up the scoring with a goal off the crossbar early in the game. This was Friedrichs second goal of the season, the first coming against the Houston Baptist University Huskies earlier in the year.
Sophomore forward Brooke Jones scored her fourth goal of the season in the 79th minute from an assist by freshman forward Landri Townsend. This goal sealed the victory for the Bearkats.
This was Jones’ third straight game with a goal, but she was also given two yellow cards in the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tatum Krueger stepped up in only her third start of the season. She had her first shutout of the season, having three saves on the game.
With the win, the Bearkats secured a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament taking place April 13-17 in Beaumont, Texas.
Sam Houston will travel to Stephen F. Austin State University to close out the season on Friday at 7 p.m. against the Ladyjacks.
