The Sam Houston Bearkats offensive struggles continued this past weekend as they lost their Southland Conference series to Houston Baptist University Huskies two games to one, getting shut out in Friday’s doubleheader. The Huskies out-hit the Bearkats 19-11 on the weekend.
In game one, Huskies junior pitcher Jessica Patak threw a no-hitter and blanked the Bearkats from start to finish as HBU won 8-0. The Bearkats sophomore pitcher Regan Dunn went five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and finished with six strikeouts. The loss moved her record to 4-5 on the year. Senior pitcher Darby Fitzpatrick came in to relieve Dunn and pitched one inning allowing three runs on two hits.
Game two was not much different as the Bearkats struggled to produce any runs, despite the fact that they put the bat on the ball a bit more, this time finishing with four hits, the same as the Huskies. HBU would go on to win 2-0 behind a double in the first inning that plated two, that would turn out to be all they needed.
Sam Houston would finish with four hits. Junior outfielder Sheridan Fisher accounted for two of them as well as Dunn and senior center fielder Megan McDonald each with one, but none of them came with runners in scoring position. Freshman pitcher Mika Vento allowed the two-run double but was brilliant aside from it going all seven innings and allowing only four hits.
Game three turned out to be just what Sam Houston needed. The 4-1 win helped them to avoid a series sweep over the weekend. Freshman pitcher Taylor Bachmeyer went 5.1 innings, only allowing three hits and one run, striking out six.
The Bearkats put up two runs in the first inning, off an HBU throwing error with runners on base. They put up two more in the second inning by another Husky throwing error and a McDonald single to make it 4-0. The Huskies plated their lone run in the sixth inning on an RBI double. Sam Houston senior outfielder Kayte Martinez had two hits on the day and three different Bearkats had an RBI.
Sam Houston will host the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns on April 6 at 6:30 p.m. for their next matchup at the Bearkat Softball Complex. Abilene Christian University will then host them for a weekend Southland Conference series April 9-10.
