Sam Houston scored in four straight innings, with three coming in the third to take down the Texas A&M University Aggies, 8-6, at Don Sanders Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Bearkats (13-13) got their seventh straight win and ninth out of the last 10 with the midweek victory over Texas A&M (19-12).
The Bearkats trailed to start the game, going down 5-1 in the first two innings with the lone Sam Houston run coming off a solo shot home run from sophomore center fielder Colton Cowser. The home run was Cowser’s ninth of the season.
Senior catcher Gavin Johnson hit a single to right field in the fifth inning to give the Bearkats a 6-5 lead and they managed to keep the lead until the end. The hit would be Johnson’s first RBI on the night, with the second coming on an RBI walk in the sixth that stretched the lead to 8-5.
Junior relief pitcher Tanner Sembera got the win, coming in to relieve starter Matt Rudis, who gave up five runs on five hits in 2.0 innings. Sembera pitched 3.0 innings allowing no runs and striking out five. A mixture of junior pitcher Cole Wesneski, sophomore pitcher Alex Havlicek and junior pitcher Lance Lusk helped close it out with the trio allowing only three hits and one run in 4.0 innings, with Lusk getting his sixth save of the year.
The Aggies struck first in the top half of the first inning, scoring on a throwing error by a Bearkat throwing error. They would go on to put up three more runs in the second inning to extend the lead, but the Bearkats answered right back on a three-run home run by Jack Rogers in the third inning to make it a 5-4 A&M lead. Sam Houston followed it up by putting up four runs in the next three innings while holding the Aggies to nothing in that span to take the lead.
The Aggies would threaten in the ninth, with one run on three hits but Lusk pulled through and produced a fly out with two Aggies on base to deep right field to end the game.
Sam Houston will now head to New Orleans to open up a four-game series with the University of New Orleans Privateers starting on Friday, April 9.
